kerkini lake

Kerkini Lake (artificial lake) is located in the northwest part of Serres Prefecture, 40 km from Serres.

Kerkini Lake was built to dam the flooding of the Strymon river and store water for irrigation in the summer months.

Kerkini Lakes fed’s by the Strymon, which flows down from Bulgaria into the north end of the lake.

The Lake Kerkini wetland is the most important Dalmatian pelican wintering site in the whole of Europe. Dalmatian pelicans are an endangered species, with only about 900 pairs left worldwide, meaning that they need immediate protection.
