Mount Taygetos

Mount Taygetus or Pentadactylos, Peloponnese ( 2,407 m. elevation )

Mount Taygetos is a majestic range in the Peloponnese, between Messenia and Laconia Prefectures, reaching a maximum height of 2,407 m. at the peak of Profitis Ilias.

In Byzantine times Mount Taygetos was also known as Pentadactylos (“Five-fingered”) due to its five peaks, and Makron Oros (“Long Mount”) due to its shape.

Mount Taygetus’ eastern sides drop sheer towards Laconia, while the western slopes run more gently to Messenia, forming the intervening Alagonia Plateau.
