Mount Agrafa

Mount Agrafa, Central Greece (2,145 m. elevation)

Mount Agrafa is an extremely mountainous, densely forested and inaccessible area of Central Greece, which includes parts of north Evrytania and Karditsa Prefecture.

The highest peaks of Mount Agrafa are Karava (2,145 m.) and Agios Ilias. The inaccessibility of the area and the fighting spirit of the inhabitants meant that Mount Agrafa retained many privileges and a large amount of independence during the period of Turkish occupation.

This independence was challenged only by the active Ali Pasha of Ioannina, but all his efforts to reduce it eventually failed. During the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Mount Agrafa provided important services and great rebel leaders to the struggle for freedom.
