Sifnos Monasteries

Sifnos Monasteries are ideal for those who are looking to spend some quiet and relaxing time praying or just enjoying the paintings. There are two monasteries in Sifnos that are worth visiting.

Monastery of Panagia Vrissis (or Lady Vrissiani) is located in Exabela settlement, little further along Apollonia on Sifnos.

The monastery was built in the 17th century on the site of the old chapel of Saint Antonios. It was, for a period of time, property of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

The wood carved screen is preserved, as well as some old icons and frescoes. The monastery also houses a collection of rare manuscripts and ecclesiastical gems. Its feast-day is September 8th.

Monastery of Panagia Hrissopigi (or Our Lady of the Golden Spring) is located in the south-eastern end of Sifnos, in Faros area. The monastery was built in 1650 on the site of an older church. It monastery houses the icon of Zoodohos Fountain which, legends say, came from the sea. Within the monastery there are cells which serve now as guest houses. Even the great Greek poet Aristomenis Provelegios stayed in one of them.
