Department of Psychiatric of the University of Athens

The contemporary Department of Psychiatry of the University of Athens owes its existence to the foundation and establishment of the Department of Neurology and Psychiatry of the University of Athens in Eginition Hospital, back in 1905.

During the first 58 years, practicing Psychiatry in Eginition was based upon the scientific practices of that time. The therapeutic methods were influenced by the theoretical assumptions and prevailing social conditions and the consequent prejudices regarding mental disorders.

Despite those conditions, the medical and nursing staff were making every effort to provide the best possible care to the patients.

At the same time, the undergraduate and postgraduate education in Neurology and Psychiatry provided essential knowledge aiming to the best practice of professions related to mental health in our country at that period, while at the same time offered the stimuli for keeping up with international scientific achievements in the field of Psychiatry.

The foundation of the Department of Psychiatric of the University of Athens as autonomous and independent from the Neurological Department back in 1963 actually signals the growth of modern psychiatry in Greece.
