Uniforms of the Greek Army
Uniform, supplied free of charge to the Greek soldiers, first appeared
as an institution in 1822; the first regular battalion, under the command
of Colonel Rodios, in 1824, wore the Greek traditional "foustanella".
Uniform has always been a characteristic distinctive mark for regular
armies, but it came to a broader use in the 17th century, when the institution
of regular armies prevailed.
The Hellenic army followed this rule, too. Even before the Independence
Revolution in 1821, Rigas Ferreos refers to the army uniform in his "Constitution
of the Hellenic State", while Dimitrios Ipsilandis, immediately after
the burst of the independence struggle, organizing the first unit, at
semi-battalion level, supplied all his men with black uniforms, thus
initializing the use of a uniform.
