Ancient Greek shipwreck in southern Peloponnese
|
|
An
unknown ancient Greek shipwreck in Peloponnese is being explored by the Hellenic
Institute of Marine Archaeology (HIMA) with special permission
granted in 1993 by the greek ministry of Culture.
The wreck was
discovered lying in 8 to 19 meters of water, very close to a small
rocky islet called Antidragonera, on the south-eastern coast of
Cythera island (southern Peloponnese).
Available information suggests
that the boat sank in the latter half of the 4th century BC. Among
the most significant finds are nine wedge shaped stone anchors.
This is the first time that such a great number of anchors is found
in situ at a single location.
