The Department of Internal Medicine of Athens University was founded in 1990 and established in the Sotiria General Hospital, in 1991.
It provides secondary and tertiary medical care with special emphasis in the fields of Hypertension, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Diabetes, Rheumatology, and Infectious Diseases.
The Department is actively involved in undergraduate medical education within the context of the curriculum of the Athens Medical School and also in postgraduate training of doctors specialized in Internal Medicine, Clinical Hematology and Gastroenterology

Hypertension Center is a reference center for the management, prevention, research and training in hypertension and related cardiovascular diseases operating within the framework of the 3rd Department of Internal Medicine of the Athens Medical School and located at the same building of the Sotiria General Hospital. It is composed of an outpatient clinic, a day clinic, a non-invasive technique unit, and a biochemichemistry laboratory. The Center aims to the implementation of modern medical technology in health care and the promotion of basic and clinical research in the field of hypertension and related diseases.
Also, it organizes small group interactive educational courses for training of primary care physicians in the management of hypertensive patients, and provides programs of patient education.
