History of Chania Hospital

Chania Hospital began its operations in the late 19th century, located in Sintivani in the old town of Chania. Initially known as the Municipal Hospital of Chania, it accommodated patients in its 40-bed facility and offered treatment for various ailments.

The first “Municipal”, as mentioned by G.P. Kalaisakis in 1885, Hania Hospital housed on the last two floors of the four-storey old Town Hall, at the corner of Zambeliou and Halidon, said to have been built by the Venetians for Navy. Mustafa Pasha’s son, Gitritli, gave it to Hania to house the municipal services, but also the first Municipal Hospital for Christians and Muslims. It is said that surgeries were also performed! On February 12, 1905, the hospital was reconstructed on Dragoumi Street with the same bed capacity and over the years it was expanded. In 1928, a new building with a 20-bed facility for venereal diseases was constructed, followed by the inauguration of a 10-bed maternity clinic in 1932, thanks to a building bequeathed by the Municipality of Chania. A decade later, in 1938, a 10-bed infectious disease ward was added, along with a new annex for administration and outpatient clinics.

In 1948, the institution was nationalized and renamed “General State Hospital of Chania “Saint George””.

In 1956, it was renamed “General Hospital of Chania “Saint George””, which also marked the beginning of the demolition and reconstruction plan of the hospital. With government funding and contributions from the Pancreas Association of America, construction of the new 100-bed facility began in 1958. The bed capacity gradually increased to:

  • 120 beds in 1961
  • 150 in 1966
  • 210 in 1973
  • 260 in 1978
  • 335 in 1986

According to the ministerial decision A3b/17970/17-10-86, published in the Government Gazette 900/22-12-86, the institution was renamed as “Regional General Hospital of Chania “Saint George””.

As of September 1, 2000, the hospital, which now has a capacity of 450 beds, operates from its new state-of-the-art facility in Mournies, Chania, which covers an impressive 49,400 square meters of covered space.
