School of Modern Greek Language

Departure of Intercultural & Migration Studies operates in the Crete University implementing the project of Educating the Greeks of Diaspora.

The specific project aims to continue, develop and promote Greek language and culture, to primary and secondary students of Greek origin, who live and study abroad, as well as non-Greek speaking students who want to learn the Greek language and become participants of the Greek culture.

The final recipients of the products of the project, will be students and teachers both of Greek and non-Greek origin, who live and work abroad.

The achievement of the fundamental objective of the project is sought through three actions (ATHENA, PROMETHEUS, HERMES), each one includes arrange of sub-actions with specific objectives.

Action I: ATHENA

Firstly, the objective of the action is to produce studies in the following areas:

  • The conditions in which the teaching of Greek in educational institutions abroad takes place
  • The social areas in which Greek language is used abroad
  • The organizations responsible for the teaching the Greek language
  • The social political and linguistic pre-conditions (levels of language learning)of students
  • The abilities and strategies to promote the teaching of Greek as a foreign language to non-Greek speaking people abroad.
  • The ability and the method of establishing bilingual educational programs in schools of the reception countries.

Secondly, the objective is the production of teaching material either in text or electronic form, for the teaching of Greek to students of both Greek and non-Greek backgrounds.

Action II: PROMETHEUS

In the specific action the in-service training of Greek teachers who have been sent overseas, is sought, but mainly, the continuing in-service training of immigrant teachers, who will act as multipliers at the regions where they teach.

Action III: HERMES

The creation of multimedia applications for the teaching of Greek language to students of Greek and non-Greek background, is sought, in the context of the research. The creation of databases in which statistical data will be included. Book lists and resource material for the teaching of the Greek language and culture will be produced. Finally the aim is to produce communication network within the World Wide Web. People and organizations involved in the teaching of the Greek language and culture in Greece and abroad will participate in this network.
