The Town of Kritinia in Rhodes

Kritinia towns is located in the south part of the island of Rhodes. Kritinia is small and picturesque town, which offers the greatest view of the sea. Just outside the town of Kristina, a secondary road leads to the Venetian Caste of Kritinia. The castle was built in the 16th century AD and is located on a steep rock, dominating the entire area.

According to the Greek Mythology, Althaemelis left Crete when an oracle told him he is going to kill his father. Althaemelis was the oldest son of Katras and the grandson of the Cretan King Minos. He arrived on Rhodes and found the village of Kritinia. Back than the village was situated where today stands Kamiros Skala.

The town of Kritinia keeps its charm untill today. In Medieval times the Castle used to protect the entire village. The Venetian Castle of Kritinia is a combination of Medieval and Byzantine architecture. Within the castle, one can find the ruin of St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Just outside the village there is a Folklore Art Museum where you can admire decorated plates, traditional costumes, a traditional loom and many more items.

The Town of Lindos in Rhodes

Lindos town is part of the Municipality of Lindos. The ancient city was a major maritime power. The village was protected by an acropolis. The village was admired for its beauty, wealth and strategic position.

Lindos is a traditional Greek village, with white houses, cobbled marrow lanes and Byzantine churches. Lindos’ main beach St. Paul’s bay, offers the possibility for any tourist to relax and enjoy water sports. You can also go shopping or spend quality time in restaurants of night-clubs.

Currently the ruins of the acropolis form one of the main attractions in the village, together with the archeological site, located around the acropolis.

The history of the sanctuary located on Lindos Acropolis begins in Geometric period (around 9th century BC). Along the eras, several temples were built and then destroyed in the exact same spot. The present temple was built around 342 BC, when the Archaic temple has been burnt. The impressive staircase also dates from this period. Later on, the cult of Zeus was introduced but Athena remained the main deity of the temple.

Excavations at the site started in 1900. During 14 years all the buildings were uncovered, along with the Lindos necropolis, spreading over the surrounding hills. Between 1912 and 1945, during Italian occupation, major restorations were carried out at the site.

The Sanctuary of Athena Lindia includes several monuments (buildings and historical landmarks): The Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, Hellenistic stoa, relief of a Rhodian ship, Hellenistic staircase, Propylaea of the Sanctuary, remains of a Roman Temple, semicircular inscribed dais of rosso antico, Hellenistic wall, The Byzantine Castle and a large medieval staircase leads to the Governor's Palace.

Outside and around Lindos Acropolis, there is an archeological site. Here you can visit the following monuments: a theatre, Four-portico building and Boukopion. It is also where Lindos necropolis is located and where some important funerary monuments can be seen, such as: "The Tomb of Kleoboulos", The Archokrateion, The Naiskos of the Taxiarch Michael, remains of the Moslem cemetery, The Church of the Panayia and Saint Georgios Chostos to name just a few.

The same fees and operation hours apply to both sites. The admission to the sites costs €6 (full) and €3 for students and seniors from EU countries (for each site). Several categories of tourists can enter for free (i.e. persons under 18, university students from EU and Greece). During summer (15th June -24th October) the site is opened on Monday from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and from Tuesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Town of Seven Springs in Rhodes

Seven Springs town (Epta Piges) can be found on the way to Archipolis Village. It’s one of the most romantic and most charming destinations on Rhodes Island. It’s a cool area, surrounded by woodland. Within the area seven bubbling springs and flowing rivers have been built. The springs and rivers were created by Italians with the purpose of irrigating the Colymbia plain. They are never dry, even in summer.

Tourists come were to walk through the dark tunnel, with ankle high water and along stones. Of course it’s not a place for those suffering of claustrophobia, but it’s an exciting place for all others. If you follow the 1 km tunnel (aqueduct tunnel), you can get to the lake and if you are lucky you may be followed by one of the peacocks that settled here. For those who are afraid of going into the tunnel you can follow the road above to get to the lake.

Within the woodland and just near the Seven Springs, there is a tavern where you can sit and enjoy a traditional Greek meal

The Town of Filerimos in Rhodes

Filerimos town is located just 8 km from the capital and stands on the on the site of the ancient city of Ialysos. A monastery, a Greek temple, the underground chapel of St George and the Hexagonal Church of the Knights, all invite the traveler to take a trip back in ancient times. Read more about Filerimos
