Subterranean Grave Complexes in Rhodes

Subterranean Grave Complexes at Korakonero is located on the southeast side of the town of Rhodes, just outside the boundary of the ancient city.

The complexes were discovered and restored before the Second World War by the Italian Archeological School.

The Subterranean Grave Complex site dates back to the Roman and Hellenistic times. The graves are cut into porous rock and are either cist graves or subterranean chambers with architectural fonts, in case of the luxurious ones. However, it is not known whom the graves belong to: wealthy families or religious groups. Originally, the area was used as a quarry.

Within the site, the most important monuments are: a tomb complex, relief depicting figures carved on the three sides of a rock, burial complexes along the ancient road connecting Rhodes with the countryside, to name just a few.

In the winter and summer (from November 1st to March 31st, from July 1st to October 31st) the Subterranean Grave Complex site is opened daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. except on Mondays when it’s closed, regardless of the season.
