The museum of Prehistoric Thera in santorini
Fira, the capital of Santorini is the place where you will find the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, a landmark that should be visited while
spending your vacation in Santorini (NOTE: Thera is the ancient name of
Santorini).
The museum was opened in March 2000 by the President of the Greek Republic,
Mr. Konstantinos Stefanopoulos and is divided into four units. There
are 500 exhibits on permanent display. The units refer to the history
of research at Thera, the geology of Thera and the island’s history.
The museum also displays archeological finding from the Akrotiri archaeological
site (which is currently closed for the public). You can find interesting
information about the structure and architecture of the Ancient City
of Akrotiri and enjoy the magnificent exhibitions of pottery, jewelry
and wall paintings.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera is on three levels. The second level
of the building is home to the temporary exhibitions, while the third
level is home to the permanent ones.
