Skinakas Observatory in Crete

Everything
astronomers need is available in Crete: High mountain peaks, a mild climate
and, what's more, a large number of clear-sky nights.
The University of Crete and the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) turned these natural facts into advantages and created the Skinakas
Observatory in 1986 in collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut for
Extraterrestrische Physik of Germany.

At the moment it is the most important common research program between
Greece and Germany.
Skinakas, one of the summits of Psiloritis near Anogia,
has been thought to be an ideal position for scientific observation.
Two buildings made of stone and perfectly matching with the wild rocky
surroundings stand out at an altitude of 1.762 m.
