Nestos - Mesta River

Nestos – Mesta river is a  Balkan river belonging to both Bulgaria and Greece.

Mesta River rises in Mount Rila in the massif south of Sofia, like the Evros river but on the southern side, and originally consists of two branches, the White and the Black.

Mesta river enters Greece in Drama Prefecture and runs southeast around the massifs of Falakro and Lekani. Finally it turns south and flows into the northern Aegean opposite Thasos, after a course of 130 kilometres on Greek soil. The river mouth forms a sizeable delta which is considered an important wetland.

The Mesta river has a large volume of water and is fairly quick-flowing (over 2 metres per second), because it drops from a high altitude over a short distance.
