White Mountains or Madares

White Mountains or Madares (2,453 m. elevation)

The White Mountains, also known as Madares Mountains because they are “madimena” (“plucked bare”), are one of the three main mountain ranges crossing Crete from west to east.

The highest peak White Mountains is Pachnes (2,453 m.). Pachnes is the second-highest point of Crete after the peak of Timios Stavros on Mount Ida (Psiloritis).

The main massif of the White Mountains rises in the Sfakia area, but their foothills extend as far as the west coast on one side and into Rethymno Prefecture on the other.
